New York City has added more than 900,000 jobs over the past decade and its 24.3% rate of growth outpaced the nation and state, according to a recent report by State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli. The U.S. job growth rate was 15.3% over the past 10 years, while New York State’s was 14.5%.
“New York City’s unemployment rate is at a historic low and job growth over the past decade has been unprecedented,” DiNapoli said. “The strong employment trends have helped boost personal income and sales tax collections, making it easier for the city to afford new services and to balance the budget. Still, some sectors have lost jobs in the past year or seen growth slow.”
In 2019, job growth was concentrated in three employment sectors, with health care accounting for 35,300, or 40%, of the jobs added. Social assistance and business services rounded out the top three.
