Pritzker Pursues Midwest Coalition on Restarting States’ Economies

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker seeks to form a regional coalition to pursue common goals in reopening states’ economies that have been largely shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic, Crain’s Chicago Business reported.

Talks reportedly are being held, although they haven’t yet led to a partnership like those announced Monday on the West Coast and in the Northeast.

“The governor is interested in exploring something like what’s happening on the East and West coasts for the Midwest,” a spokeswoman for Pritzker told Crain’s. “It would be some sort of regional cooperation.”

She declined to say whether Pritzker was having one-on-one discussions with his counterparts in other states. “I think our goal is to work together on things such as what do you do about stay-at-home orders, legalities and so forth.”

The idea of a regional approach comes as some states see signs that the curve of new cases is flattening.
